About the University of Oxford

Teaching at Oxford dates back to at least 1096, which makes it the oldest university in the English-speaking world and the second-oldest in the world still operating, after the University of Bologna. It grew fast in 1167, when Henry II barred English students from studying in Paris and sent them to Oxford instead.

Oxford City Centre is the obvious pick for most colleges. Rents run higher, but you're within walking distance of the Bodleian, the Examination Schools, and most central faculties.

Cowley Road, southeast of the centre, is louder and cheaper. Expect a strip of curry houses, live music venues, and independent cafés, with a walk into town of about 20 minutes or a short hop on the bus.

Jericho, tucked northwest along the canal, is quieter and only a 10 to 15 minute walk from the centre. It's home to the Phoenix Picturehouse and the old Oxford University Press building, and suits students who want to be near town without the noise of Cowley Road.

Headington, further east, sits near the John Radcliffe Hospital, useful if you're on a medical course with placements there, and shares its bus links with Oxford Brookes students.

Summertown, up Banbury Road to the north, is leafier and a favourite with postgrads and academic staff. It's a longer trip into the centre but has its own row of shops and cafés if you'd rather not go into town for everything.

Getting to campus

Oxford is compact enough that most students walk or cycle between colleges, libraries, and the centre, and the city is genuinely built for both. From Cowley Road, Oxford Bus Company's Service 5 runs straight into the city centre in around 10 minutes. Service 8 links Headington to the centre via Brookes, and Stagecoach's 2 and 2A run down Banbury Road from Summertown. From Jericho and most of the centre itself, walking is usually faster than waiting for a bus.
