Getting around

Cornmarket Street and Queen Street are pedestrianised, so most of daily life here happens on foot. The city centre sits about half a mile, roughly a ten-minute walk, from Oxford railway station, and Gloucester Green bus station in the centre handles coach and long-distance bus connections.

Oxford is also a genuinely easy city to cycle around, flat and compact, with cycle lanes on most main roads out of the centre. For Oxford Brookes students, Oxford Bus Company's service 8 runs from the city centre out to Headington via Brookes University. Most of the student houses Oxford City Centre residents rent are a short bus ride from Headington rather than a full commute.

Universities near Oxford City Centre

This is where it gets unusual: a huge chunk of the University of Oxford is physically in the city centre. Christ Church, Merton, Oriel, Corpus Christi, Balliol, Trinity, Exeter, Lincoln, Jesus, and Brasenose colleges all sit within a few streets of Carfax, alongside the Bodleian Library and the Radcliffe Camera. If your college is here, living here too can mean rolling out of bed closer to your first tutorial than you'd get anywhere else in the city.

Oxford Brookes University is a bit further out. Its main Headington campus sits around a mile east of the centre, connected by the service 8 bus and a walkable, if not exactly flat, route on foot.
