About the University of West London

UWL's main campus sits on St Mary's Road in Ealing, W5, the site the university has occupied since it began life as the Lady Byron School in 1860. It went through several names over the following century, becoming Thames Valley University in 1992 before taking the University of West London name in 2010. A £100 million redevelopment finished in 2015 added a new library, student union, and updated teaching space, and the campus sits a short walk from Ealing Studios, the world's oldest continuously working film studio according to Guinness World Records.

UWL runs nine schools, including the London College of Music and the London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism, which won the Queen's Anniversary Prize for hospitality education in 2009. Other schools cover business, computing and engineering, nursing and healthcare, law, and film and media. The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide named UWL the best modern university in London for 2026, and the Complete University Guide places it 84th out of 130 UK universities in its 2027 league table. On the international side, UWL's own published figures put it in the top 60% of universities in Europe in the QS World University Rankings.

Popular student areas near the University of West London

Most students studying at UWL live in and around Ealing itself, close enough to walk or cycle to St Mary's Road. It's a leafy, largely residential part of west London with independent cafés on the Broadway, a big Sainsbury's and smaller convenience shops for the weekly shop, and enough green space (Walpole Park sits right by the campus) to get outside between lectures. If Ealing itself is full or you want more choice on price, the wider West London area covers the neighbouring pockets around Acton and Hanwell, both a short bus or train ride from the UWL campus and generally a bit cheaper than properties directly on Ealing's main roads.
