What's around Soho

Soho is small on the map and enormous on things to do. Berwick Street still runs its fruit, veg and record-stall market most weekdays, a few doors down from Carnaby Street's shops and the wall of neon at Kingly Court. On Frith Street, Ronnie Scott's has been London's home for live jazz since 1959, and Bar Italia two doors along has been serving espresso to the same street since 1949 and doesn't shut until the small hours. Chinatown starts at Gerrard Street, five minutes south, for the cheapest hot food in the area. For something quieter, Soho Square Gardens is the only real green space inside the neighbourhood, and it fills up with lunch crowds the second the sun comes out. Film students and everyone else use the Curzon Soho on Shaftesbury Avenue for a cinema that isn't a multiplex. A Tesco Express on Dean Street and a handful of convenience stores on Wardour and Brewer Street cover the basics. This isn't a neighbourhood built around a weekly big shop, so expect to top up little and often.

Getting around

Soho's biggest selling point for students is how little getting around actually involves. Tottenham Court Road station sits on its eastern edge with the Elizabeth line Central and Northern lines all under one roof, so King's Cross, Paddington and Stratford are all one change away at most. Oxford Circus (Central, Victoria, Bakerloo) sits just north, Piccadilly Circus (Piccadilly, Bakerloo) just south, and Leicester Square (Northern, Piccadilly) covers the eastern flank. Most of Soho itself is walkable in fifteen minutes end to end, and Santander Cycles docking stations dotted through the area make the ten-minute pedal to Bloomsbury or Fitzrovia an easy option on a dry evening.

Universities near Soho

University of Westminster's Regent Street campus (confirmed at 309 Regent Street) sits right on Soho's western edge, close enough that most students walk it in under ten minutes rather than bother with the Tube. UCL's Bloomsbury campus is a short hop north, roughly 20 minutes on foot or one stop on the Northern line from Tottenham Court Road to Goodge Street. LSE's Holborn campus is a similar distance east, an easy walk down through Covent Garden or a couple of stops on the Piccadilly line.
