The area's landmark is the Picton Clock Tower, a Grade II listed tower built in 1884 on Wavertree High Street. Sir James Picton put it up in memory of his wife Sarah Pooley, and it's still the spot everyone uses to give directions locally.

Wavertree Town Hall, a restored 1872 building that was nearly demolished before reopening as a bar and restaurant, is worth knowing about too.

Getting around

Wavertree Technology Park station runs direct trains into Liverpool Lime Street three times an hour on weekdays, so you're rarely waiting long if you'd rather take the train than the bus. For buses, the 86 runs between Liverpool city centre and Liverpool Hope University, and the 75 and 79 both connect Wavertree to the city centre and onward to Mount Pleasant, near the University of Liverpool campus. It's a couple of miles into town, an easy cycle if you're that way inclined, or under half an hour on the bus most days.

The University of Liverpool campus is a couple of miles away, a walkable distance on a good day or a short bus ride when it isn't.
