About the University of Liverpool
University of Liverpool traces back to 1881, when it opened as University College Liverpool. It received its royal charter in 1903, becoming a fully independent, degree-awarding university and one of the original "redbrick" universities, a label borrowed from the deep red brick of its Victoria Building and later applied to a handful of civic universities founded around the same period. It's a Russell Group member today, and the Victoria Building still stands on campus as the Victoria Gallery & Museum.
The university is currently ranked 20th in the UK by The Complete University Guide 2027, and 139th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, having climbed more than 50 places over the past four years. Its School of Medicine, founded in 1835, is one of the largest medical education providers in the UK, and the university claims Britain's first departments in oceanography, civic design, architecture, and biochemistry. Veterinary students train at the university's Leahurst site across the Mersey on the Wirral, while most other courses run from the main campus around Mount Pleasant and Abercromby Square, roughly five minutes' walk from the city centre. The Liverpool Guild of Students, the university's students' union, runs societies, welfare support, and events out of its Mount Pleasant building, including gigs at Mountford Hall.
Worth knowing before you search: University of Liverpool is a separate institution from Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Hope University, and the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). All four sit in the same city, but they're different universities with different campuses, so double-check which one you mean when you're comparing course pages or halls.
Popular student areas near the University of Liverpool
Liverpool City Centre. University of Liverpool accommodation in the city centre puts you closest to campus, alongside the shops on Bold Street and the waterfront. It suits anyone who'd rather walk to a lecture and walk to a night out, on the same pair of legs.
Edge Hill. A few streets southeast of the centre, Edge Hill is quieter and mostly Georgian terraces, bordering Kensington and Wavertree. Don't confuse it with Edge Hill University, a different institution based twenty miles away in Ormskirk. Students here get a calmer street to come home to and Edge Hill railway station on their doorstep, one of the oldest passenger stations in the world still in use, opened in 1836.
Both areas feed into the same lecture halls, so the choice usually comes down to whether you'd rather be in the middle of things or a bit further from them.
Getting to campus
Most of the main teaching buildings sit within a five-minute walk of the city centre, so plenty of students skip public transport altogether. Getting in from Edge Hill takes a bit more planning: it's a short walk for some streets, or a one-stop train into Liverpool Lime Street for others, with campus on foot from there. Lime Street connects to the wider Merseyrail network too, so students living further out along the line can still get to lectures without much hassle.
