Student housing in Leeds
Leeds is a popular destination for students thanks to its great nightlife, afforded by well-distributed student areas. Most student houses in Leeds are clustered north-west of the centre (LS6/LS4/LS2 edges), while newer studios and apartment blocks sit closer to town and the main campuses. That gives you good clarity on where to look for your housing.
On Housr, you can browse student accommodation in Leeds and filter by area, house size, and location with ease, so you’re not scrolling through listings that don’t fit your budget or your routine.
How to shortlist student accommodation in Leeds
Commute to campus
The University of Leeds sits just north of the centre. It’s around a 20-minute walk from Leeds Railway Station to campus, and it’s uphill from the station towards the campus. Keep that in mind for those early, half-asleep walks to lectures! Find student housing near the University of Leeds
Leeds Beckett University has a City Campus near the centre and a Headingley Campus in LS6. You’ll either want city-centre convenience or LS6 life. Student homes close to Leeds Beckett University
Leeds Trinity University is in Horsforth (LS18), so good bus routes nearby matter a lot. Student accommodation near Leeds Trinity University

Lock your non-negotiables early
All property prices listed on Housr include bills via a Housr Bills package (water, energy, ultrafast internet, contents insurance), so the weekly price you see is your actual weekly cost. Consider other non-negotiables for you, such as nearby green space and proximity to shops.
Before you commit to a property, check:
- Start date + length (does it match your course year?)
- Deposit + guarantor requirements
- Who manages repairs, and how reporting works
We recommend you view first, then deep-dive into the admin. It’s easy to burn time on tenancy questions for a place you won’t even choose.
What makes Leeds good for students?
Leeds is very well known for its lively student life, with plenty of student areas to pick from when it comes to deciding where you’d like to live.
Rail connections
If you travel home frequently, Leeds is also a strong base for rail travel. Leeds is one of the busiest stations outside London and is well-connected to other Northern hubs via the Transpennine Rail network. LNER also connects Leeds to London King's Cross station. Leeds train station is about a 20-minute walk from the University of Leeds, for reference.
Discounted student travel
For local travel, West Yorkshire’s MCard has discounted options for 19–25s and students across bus and train travel in West Yorkshire.
Student areas to consider in Leeds
Hyde Park
Hyde Park is one of the best-known student areas for student housing in Leeds, offering affordable shared houses with benefits such as proximity to green space, bus connections, The University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett city campus, as well as a good selection of shops and takeaways to indulge in. Houses in supply are generally the terraced houses that line the streets of Hyde Park - you sacrifice greenery and peace around your street for the closeness to Uni and neighbouring students.
Being close to the Otley Run route, you can expect a bustling living environment when in Hyde Park. Find student accommodation in Hyde Park on Housr.
Headingley
Headingley is the first real village on the way out of Leeds if you’re heading to the student area, and with it comes a quieter yet still active atmosphere to live in. The High Street (Otley Road) provides supermarkets for your big shop, cafes to study in, an even bigger selection of takeaways and dessert spots, as well as bus routes into the city. Headingley is lively yet with a better community feel than Hyde Park. Roads are more spread out, and it doesn’t feel as viciously cramped as Hyde Park’s terraced houses. Browse student housing in Headingley on Housr.
Woodhouse
Woodhouse is the in-between of Hyde Park and the city centre, and encompasses The University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett city campuses. Less popular as a student residence, you’ll often find less supply and higher prices in these areas, thanks to its proximity to both Universities and the city centre. Discover student houses in Woodhouse on Housr.
Burley
As Burley is a little further out of the city than other popular areas, you often will find not only more housing options to pick from, but bigger houses if you’re in a shared group. Burley, despite being further out, is well connected to the city through Burley Park train station - good for getting into the city or further out for a day. Browse student accommodation in Burley on Housr.
Kirkstall
You’ll rely more heavily on buses and trains to get to and from campus, and the city when living in Kirkstall, but what Kirkstall lacks in being further out of the city is more than made up for with the atmosphere of the area. Home to Kirkstall Abbey, one of the hottest spots come summertime throughout Leeds, Kirkstall offers a quieter existence day-to-day, with lots of green space to boot.

Horsforth
Horsforth is the best spot for Leeds Trinity students, as its main campus is located here. A mix of suburbia and student activity, it’s again a much quieter location to live in than some of the other options in Leeds. Still well connected to the city through Horsforth train station, it’s the best option for peace-loving students. Find next year’s uni house in Horsforth on Housr.
Choosing between student houses, rooms, and studios in Leeds
Student houses (house shares)
Best if you’re renting with mates and want more space.
Private rooms in shared homes
If you haven’t yet decided on who you want to live with, want to live with new people, or are left trying to find somewhere when most properties have been rented, you can use Housr’s Roomie feature on our app to find or fill spare rooms with other students. Download Housr on iOS here and on Android here.
Studios and 1-bed flats
Arguably, these can be harder to find on a student budget, and you’ll often pay a premium on these properties since they’re generally located close to, if not in, the city centre, and you have to pay for the luxury of being able to live alone.
