Student housing in Lewes
Lewes sits on the River Ouse about seven miles northeast of Brighton, tucked into a gap in the South Downs. As the county town of East Sussex, it runs on a working high street and a market that's been going for centuries, with none of the usual student-strip chains. If you're looking at student housing in Lewes instead of somewhere closer to campus, you're trading a five-minute walk to lectures for a town that feels like its own place, with a fast, direct line back into Brighton whenever you need it.
That trade works for a specific kind of student: someone who wants space from the Brighton crowds without losing the connection to university life, or who's found a house share here through family or a job and wants Housr's filters (weekly price, bedrooms, bathrooms, single rooms versus studios) rather than scrolling endless listings sites to check it stacks up.
What's around Lewes
The town centre runs along Cliffe High Street and the High Street proper, both lined with independent shops, a Tesco and a Waitrose for the weekly shop, and Lewes's Monday and Saturday markets. Harvey's Brewery has been brewing on the Ouse since 1790 and its tower still dominates the skyline; locals half-jokingly call it the town's cathedral.
For history, Lewes Castle and Museum climbs above the rooftops and gives you the best view in town, and Anne of Cleves House down the road is a genuine 16th-century timber-framed survivor. Pells Pool is the oldest freshwater outdoor lido in England, spring-fed and properly cold even in June, which somehow makes it more popular rather than less. Southover Grange gardens and Malling Recreation Ground cover the green space, and the South Downs start almost as soon as the town ends: Mount Caburn and Landport Bottom are both an easy walk out for a proper view back over the valley.
Getting around
Lewes station sits on the East Coastway Line, run by Southern, with around 90 trains a day into Brighton and a fastest journey time of about 14 minutes (typically closer to 19 with stops). Trains to Falmer, the stop for both the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton's Falmer campus, take as little as 7 minutes and run almost as often. Neither route needs a change.
By road, the Regency 29 bus (Brighton & Hove Buses) runs limited-stop between Brighton and Falmer before continuing on to Lewes and out towards Ringmer and Heathfield, useful if trains are disrupted or you're travelling late. The town centre itself is compact enough to walk end to end in fifteen minutes, and National Cycle Network routes follow the Ouse valley if you'd rather cycle into Brighton on a dry day.
Universities near Lewes
Lewes doesn't have a campus of its own, so this only works if you're happy commuting. The direct train to Falmer covers both the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton, whose Falmer site sits right by the station along with its Moulsecoomb campus a short bus ride further on. University of Brighton's Grand Parade campus, in the city centre, is reachable on the same direct line into Brighton station and then a walk or a short hop across town.
Accommodation in Lewes
Student accommodation in Lewes tends towards shared houses and the odd studio, closer in feel to a normal town letting market than the shared-house terraces you'd find lining a typical student street. Search Housr's list, tile, or interactive map view and filter by weekly price, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, and whether you want a single room or a self-contained studio, same as anywhere else on the platform.
