About Arts University Bournemouth
AUB started life in 1880 as the Bournemouth Government School of Art. It went through a few names after that: Bournemouth and Poole College of Art in 1964, then The Arts Institute at Bournemouth in 1998, before it earned full university status in 2012. The Bournemouth Film School, folded into AUB, has been training film-makers since 1963 and is still one of the university's best-known faculties, alongside courses in animation, architecture, costume and performance design, and art and design.
The campus sits on Fern Barrow, just off Wallisdown Road on the Bournemouth-Poole border: fourteen specialist buildings across roughly five hectares, built for work that doesn't happen on a laptop. Print rooms, animation suites, costume workshops, a foundry.
AUB is a specialist creative institution, so it doesn't feature in the QS World University Rankings, which are built around large multi-faculty universities. Where it does show up is the Complete University Guide's 2027 UK league table, placing 72nd out of 130 overall, with its Architecture course ranked 44th out of 58. Its alumni include director Edgar Wright, screenwriter Simon Beaufoy, and Turner Prize-winning photographer Wolfgang Tillmans.
Where AUB students live
Most AUB students split between Wallisdown itself and Winton, a short bus ride away.
Wallisdown is the practical choice. You're on Wallisdown Road, a walk from Fern Barrow, with cafés, a supermarket, and Bournemouth University's Talbot campus for company. Wallisdown Road won't win any beauty contests, but you're a five-minute stumble from a 9am seminar.
Winton has more going on. Wimborne Road's shops and cafés include an Italian spot called Bellagio and a Coffee#1 that gets busy on weekday mornings, and it's roughly two kilometres from AUB's Wallisdown Road campus, close enough that some students walk it when the weather's kind. If you'd rather see the full spread of options than just this pocket of Poole, browse student accommodation right across Bournemouth and filter down from there.
Getting to campus
Morebus route 6 runs from Bournemouth's railway station straight through Winton to the university area roughly every 15 minutes on weekdays, with the ride taking 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic. Routes 17 and 36 also stop near the AUB campus if you're coming from further out.
Bournemouth train station itself connects onward to Southampton, Weymouth, and London Waterloo, useful for trips home once term's underway.
