What's around Digbeth

The Custard Factory is the anchor of the area, a fifteen-acre complex of independent shops, bars, and studio space built inside Bird's old custard works. Zellig, its restored Grade II listed building, holds more workspace and food units, and the Mockingbird Cinema sits a few doors down for a night off your laptop. On a clear evening, Gibb Square's fountains and its forty-foot Green Man sculpture make a decent spot to eat chips before heading home.

Digbeth's Irish Quarter runs along the High Street, where Hennessy's and The Kerryman have poured pints since long before "creative quarter" was a phrase anyone used. The area's Saint Patrick's Day parade draws crowds into the tens of thousands most years, so expect the odd road closure in March.

For green space, Eastside City Park sits just north of the area, a strip of lawns, trees, and a canal feature that runs from Park Street Gardens up to Birmingham City University's Parkside building. It's small, but it's proper grass, and it's usually where students sit out when lectures finish early. The Bullring and Grand Central are a short walk away too, for the big supermarket shop or anything Digbeth's independents don't stock.

Getting around

Digbeth Coach Station puts you on a direct National Express service to most major UK cities, useful when you're heading home for the holidays without dragging a suitcase across three train changes. Moor Street and Snow Hill stations are both a walkable distance away, with Bordesley a little closer still for local services.

The West Midlands Metro's Eastside extension opened as far as Millennium Point in April 2026, right by BCU's campus, with track already laid further into Digbeth itself. The final stretch into the area will open once engineers get access to the Curzon Street HS2 site next door, so the tram link is close but not quite finished. Until then, walking and the canal towpath do most of the work: the towpath runs straight through Digbeth and makes for a flat, quiet cycle into the city centre or out toward the suburbs.

Universities near Digbeth

Birmingham City University's City Centre Campus is about as close as it gets. The Curzon Building and Millennium Point sit right on Eastside City Park, a walk of around ten minutes from most Digbeth addresses, which makes it one of the shortest commutes going for Housr students near BCU.

Gosta Green, where Aston University sits, is further round on the other side of the city centre. Still walkable in about 25 minutes, or a short bus ride if the weather's against you. Worth checking out housing near Aston if you're studying there but fancy Digbeth's postcode.

University of Birmingham's Edgbaston campus is the outlier, roughly three miles southwest. It has its own train station, University, on the Cross-City Line, so the fastest route from Digbeth is a short walk to Moor Street or New Street and one train straight there.
