Blank Street Coffee is opening ahead of the main launch, so there's somewhere for a matcha before a 9am seminar.

For something with more history, East Street Market runs Tuesday to Sunday down toward Walworth, selling fruit, veg, clothes and the odd phone case for less than the shops charge. Burgess Park is one of south London's largest green spaces at 56 hectares, with a lake, an outdoor gym, and pitches you can book through the council for football or cricket. Budget about 20 minutes on foot to reach it from the station.

The London College of Communication, part of the University of the Arts London, is based at Elephant and Castle too, which keeps a steady flow of art and design students moving through the cafés nearby. Its new building is due to open just across the road in September 2027, with its own entrance straight into the redeveloped tube station.

Getting around

Elephant and Castle station is a genuine transport hub. The Northern line's Bank branch runs through it, and it's the southern terminus of the Bakerloo line, so you're rarely fighting for space on the platform this end of the route. There's also an interchange with the National Rail platforms next door for anyone heading further out.

Buses fill in the rest. The 12 runs up to Oxford Circus via Westminster, the 63 heads the other way through Blackfriars and Farringdon to King's Cross, and routes including the 35, 40, 53, 68, 172 and 188 all stop within a couple of minutes' walk of the station. TfL is also partway through a multi-million-pound upgrade of the station, digging a new ticket hall roughly 33 metres down that's set to bring step-free access to the Northern line for the first time once it's done.

Universities near Elephant and Castle

London South Bank University is about as close as it gets. Its Southwark campus on Borough Road sits right next to Elephant and Castle station, so it's less a commute and more a stroll across the junction.
