For nights out, O2 Academy Brixton (still Brixton Academy to most locals) has hosted touring acts for decades, and the Ritzy Picturehouse on Brixton Oval has been screening films since 1911, making it one of the oldest working cinemas in the city. When you need actual grass rather than paving stones, Brockwell Park is a fifteen-minute walk south, with a lido, a walled garden, and enough space to get away from your housemates for an afternoon.

Getting around

Brixton tube station sits at the southern end of the Victoria line, in zone 2, and is hard to miss from the street thanks to the largest station roundel on the entire Underground network. From here it's a straight run to Victoria, Oxford Circus, and King's Cross without changing trains. Southeastern also runs a rail service from Brixton on the Chatham Main Line, between London Victoria and Orpington, with around four trains an hour in each direction for most of the day.

Buses fill in the gaps the trains leave. The 196 runs direct from Elephant & Castle to Brixton Station in around seventeen minutes, useful if your course is based that end of Southwark. The 45 connects Brixton straight to Camberwell Green and Denmark Hill without a change, stopping at Loughborough Junction on the way. Brixton Hill and the roads toward Clapham are flat enough for a daily cycle too, and there are Santander Cycles docking points dotted around the station for short hops.

Universities near Brixton

King's College London's Denmark Hill campus, home to the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and next to King's College Hospital, sits in Camberwell a short ride from Brixton on the 45 bus. It's the closest campus to the area, and plenty of King's students pick Brixton over Camberwell itself for the market, the nightlife, and the slightly softer rents.

London South Bank University's main campus in Elephant & Castle is a direct run on the 196, door to door in well under half an hour once you count the walk at either end. It's a longer commute than Camberwell, but still close enough to make Brixton a realistic base if your lectures are at LSBU rather than King's.
