Student housing in Coventry City Centre
Coventry University's main campus sits on Priory Street, right in the middle of the city centre, so student housing in Coventry City Centre usually means lectures, the library, and your own front door within a few minutes of each other. No bus into uni, no early alarm to beat the traffic. You step outside and you're already there.
It's a livelier patch than "city centre" might suggest. Broadgate, the main square, is a short walk from campus and has been the meeting point in Coventry since long before the Lady Godiva statue went up there in 1949. Around it: the cathedral, the shops, the bus station, and a lot of students who've worked out they don't need a car.
What's around Coventry City Centre
Coventry Cathedral is directly opposite the university on Priory Street. The ruins of the medieval cathedral, bombed in the Blitz, sit next to the new building, and the best way in is through the ruins via Cuckoo Lane. Right next door on Jordan Well is the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, which is free to enter and an easy stop between lectures. A short walk from the cathedral, Lady Herbert's Garden is a walled garden with two medieval gates, tucked behind the ring road and often overlooked.
For food and something to do beyond the library, FarGo Village on Far Gosford Street is Coventry's independent quarter: street food, small shops in repurposed shipping containers, and regular markets, a short walk from campus down Gosford Street. Closer to the middle of the centre, the Skydome has an ODEON cinema and an ice rink that doubles as home ground for the Coventry Blaze ice hockey team. Coventry Transport Museum on Millennium Place is worth an afternoon if you want to see ThrustSSC, the current land speed record holder, under one roof, and the Belgrade Theatre on Belgrade Square runs a full programme of touring shows and local productions most weeks.
Shopping is split between two centres a few minutes apart: Lower Precinct, which alone accounts for more than a quarter of the city centre's retail space and has H&M, River Island, and Lush among its shops, and West Orchards on Smithford Way, home to Marks & Spencer and a run of food outlets. For the weekly shop, there's a Sainsbury's on Trinity Street, a five-minute walk from most campus buildings. If you want grass rather than pavement, Greyfriars Green sits between the railway station and the centre and is the closest proper green space to campus.
Getting around
Coventry railway station on Station Square is a 10 to 20 minute walk from most university buildings, or you can pick up the 8, 8A, 9, 9A, 85, 585 or X30 bus outside, which run into the centre roughly every ten minutes. A taxi from the station costs about £3. From the station there are direct trains to London Euston and a journey of around 20 minutes to Birmingham International, useful if you're flying home for the holidays.
If you're arriving by coach, Pool Meadow bus station is a short walk up Priory Street to campus, and it's also the drop-off point most students use when they're back from a weekend away.
